Jesus Heals a Woman and a Girl

Hi there parents! Welcome back! Or if you're new here, welcome! The following blog is here to be a tool for you to help your kids grow in their faith while we can't be meeting weekly during this time. Please feel free to use as much of it as you choose. You know your kids and are the best possible teacher for them. God has given you the power of the Holy Spirit to enable you to do more than you think possible (Eph 3:20).

As we begin to gather together again in person, I want to assure you that I will continue to publish this blog to keep our little ones engaged in the gospel until we can meet again for children's church. Please let them know I miss them all and can't wait to meet in person again soon!

May I encourage you with a verse from Deuteronomy about teaching your children the scriptures? Chapter 6 verse 9 says, "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." Maybe you don't have time to sit and have an hour of Bible time all at once, or maybe your children are to young to sit for that long. Take the key points and ask God to give you opportunities to speak them into the hearts of your children throughout the week. Let the Bible become a part of your day to day. Be blessed this week my friends!

Each week we will include songs, activity pages, the bible lesson video, memory verses and possibly a craft or 2. We pray this will help you find ways to engage your kids spiritually. It is written in script form from the K-2nd grade lesson so you can read directly from it or change it up to suit your children. Take a few moments to print the activity pages as well as the additional activities and review the lesson so you can make adjustments as needed. I have included the Bible and Discussion questions along with a breakdown of the Gospel in the Older Kids Activities pages and loads of activities and crafts on the Preschool Extra Activity Pages. Once you are ready, go ahead and start with these songs if you'd like or pick some of your favorite worship songs and then jump right in! Have fun! And remember, this does not need to be done in one sitting! Feel free to break it up over the course of the week. Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions. I'd love to hear from you!

So let's get started. I like to begin each week with Blessings and Bummers. Tell me, what have you seen the Lord doing in your lives during this time at home? What have your greatest blessings been? How about your biggest bummers?

Parents share your blessings and bummers, and encourage the kids to do the same. Here is mine. My blessing this week is my husband. It is our anniversary next Friday and I can't help but think of what a blessing he is in many ways. One way he blesses me is that I always know I can go to him for help.

Let's go to the Lord in prayer. Father God, we love you Lord. You are so good to us even though we don't deserve it! Thank you for continuing to bless us Lord. Thank you for our friends as well as our families. Help us to appreciate all you do for us and to look to you in all that we do. In Jesus name, Amen.

(please add to or customize prayer time to fit your family)

Praise the Lord for hearing our prayers! Today we will learn about a time that Jesus healed a woman and raised a little girl from the dead! But right now I want to ask you; Who do you go to when you need help?  Allow them to answer. It may be you parents, grandparents, police officer, fireman, etc. affirm and encourage all responses. We will talk more about this in a minute for now, let's take a look at our starter activity and Big Picture Question:

22_BigPictureQuestion_Answer.jpg

As we get into our story, it’s important to remember our big picture question and answer. Why did God create people? God created people to worship Him, love Him, and show His glory. God did not need us, but He wanted to show His goodness and glory through us. He created us so we could glorify and love Him. God knew that we would choose to disobey Him, which would bring about pain, sickness, and death. God created us for His glory anyway. He sent Jesus to show us His glory and love by dying for our sin and rising again on the third day.

Jesus came to earth as a baby, but His ministry began when He grew into an adult. He traveled around healing people, teaching about God, and doing miracles, proving He is the Messiah. Last week we learned that Jesus gives living water and that by trusting in Him He gives us everything we need! After that He healed many people including ten men, and one was saved. This week we will hear about two people Jesus healed: a young girl and a grown woman.

Today’s Bible story is called “Jesus Healed a Woman and a Girl.” Let’s find out why they needed Jesus’ help.

Volume 8 Unit 22 Session 1

I love this story so much. Notice that Jesus pointed to the woman’s faith. She was so certain Jesus is the Messiah, she knew just touching His clothing could heal her. It wasn’t the act of touching His robe that healed her. That was simply the moment the healing happened. Jesus said it was her faith in Him.

Sometimes I stop and think about how Jairus must have felt. He believed Jesus could heal his daughter, but he was probably feeling very nervous and rushed. He wanted Jesus to come right away. If I were in that situation, a large crowd would have made me feel impatient and frustrated. Jairus might have felt that way too.

When Jesus stopped to ask about someone touching His clothes, I can’t help but imagine how I’d have reacted. I might have thought something like: Um, hello? Did You forget about my daughter? Do we really have time for this question about Your clothing?! But Jesus’ power isn’t limited by time or even space.

Jesus didn’t need to arrive on time, lay hands on her, or even travel to her at all. If Jesus had wanted to, He could have simply said, “Your daughter is healed,” and it would have been true. By going through the steps of traveling to her, Jesus was making more opportunities for God’s glory to be revealed to us.

By healing the woman and raising the little girl from the dead, Jesus showed His power as the Messiah. Jesus died on the cross and rose again to save people from sin and death. When we trust in Jesus, God forgives our sins and changes us to be more like His Son.

His healing of the woman showed His compassion and love and helped prove His identity as God the Son. I bet that woman worshiped God and glorified Him after that. And by arriving after the little girl had died, Jesus was able to show His power, not just over sickness, but over death too. I think Jairus and his family probably glorified God after their experience as well.

Bible Time!

Distribute a Bible to each kid. Help kids find Mark 5. If necessary, review how to use a Bible’s table of contents and the chapter and verse numbers to find specific passages. You may select a strong reader to read verses 39–42.

Ask the following questions. Lead the kids to discuss:

Who was Jairus? (a leader in the synagogue and father to a dying girl, Mark 5:22-23)

How long had the older woman been suffering with her sickness? (12 years, Mark 5:25)

How did the people outside Jairus’ house react when Jesus said the girl wasn’t dead? (They laughed. They had no faith; Mark 5:39-40)

What can we do if someone we know is sick or hurting? Guide kids to think about ways to show love to others who are going through difficult circumstances. Help them see that praying for others is the strongest tool we have against hard times. Remind them that Jesus doesn’t promise our lives will be easy or pain free, but we can trust Him to always do what is right.

How can we show our faith in Jesus? Help kids brainstorm ways to share their faith with others by giving God credit when they succeed, talking about what they learn in church, or telling others about the ways Jesus has helped them overcome difficult times.

How can we glorify God if someone we love isn’t healed when we ask God to heal them? Guide kids to see that our hope is not in physical healing but in the restoration of the world that will come when Jesus returns. Help them see that people who have faith in Jesus will live eternally with God, no matter what hard times they go through now.

Say • Jesus healed a woman and raised a girl from the dead. Jesus has power over sickness and death. When we have faith, Jesus raises us to new life in Him and heals us from the damage sin causes.

Let's look at our new key memory verse together: This is a new one this week! It's a bit long but I know you can handle it! Here's a fun activity to help:

22_KeyPassage_ESV.jpg

Read the key passage aloud with your kids. Then cover a word or two using sticky notes and say the passage again. Continue covering words or phrases until the kids say the entire passage from memory. Encourage the kids to continue working on the key passage.

Say • This key passage was written about Jesus long before Jesus was born as a human baby. God gave Isaiah exactly the right words to help people understand what the Messiah would be like and what He would do. Isaiah explained that the Messiah would be a servant. He would take on sickness and pain that were not His and fix those problems for His people. Jesus healed a woman and raised a girl from the dead, and He died on the cross to take away sin for everyone who has faith in Him.

Let's close in prayer:

Father, thank You for sending Your Son to rescue us from sin. Help us trust You, love You, and obey Your Word. Heal us from the damage sin does in our lives. Amen.

*If anyone reading this has questions about being born again, eternal life with Jesus, or God's love for us please feel free to contact the church at fcbc@fcbc.church and someone will get back with you to talk.*
